#6 Critiquing a Media Critic

Brittany Broski

When people think of media critics, they often picture serious movie reviewers or writers for big websites. But in today’s world, media criticism doesn’t just come from newspapers or fancy blogs—it comes from social media too. One of the best examples of this new kind of media critic is Brittany Broski. She might be known as the “Kombucha Girl” from her viral meme, but she’s grown into someone who gives honest, funny, and smart opinions about music, movies, and internet culture. In this paper, I’ll talk about how she got her start, what makes her a strong media critic, and what some of her weaknesses are too.

Brittany Broski first became famous in 2019 when a video of her trying kombucha went viral. In the clip, she tastes it and goes through a rollercoaster of facial expressions—disgust, confusion, and maybe a little surprise. That video turned her into a meme overnight. Instead of letting that be the end of her internet fame, she took the moment and ran with it. She started posting more videos on TikTok and YouTube, eventually becoming a full-time content creator.

Now, Brittany makes all kinds of content—from reaction videos and pop culture commentary to her podcast, The Broski Report On her platforms, she talks about everything from music and movies to internet drama and personal life. She isn’t a traditional critic, but she has a huge influence on how young people talk about media today.

One thing that makes Brittany stand out is how real and funny she is. She doesn’t try to sound smart or fancy. Instead, she talks about media the same way regular people do—with humor, emotion, and honesty. When she reviews a Taylor Swift album or reacts to a new movie trailer, it feels like talking to a friend who really gets it.

She also connects deeply with Gen Z culture. She uses memes, internet slang, and pop culture references that her audience understands. Because she’s so in touch with internet trends and fan culture, her opinions feel fresh and relatable.

Another strong point is that she often points out how women are treated in media. She talks about how female characters are written, how women artists are judged, and how the internet treats women differently than men. Even when she’s joking, she makes smart points that make people think.

Brittany Broski is a great example of how media criticism is changing. She might not be a classic movie reviewer, but she’s found a way to talk about pop culture that feels fun, real, and meaningful. By using humor and emotion, she’s made media critique more relatable to younger audiences. While she might not go super deep or stay organized all the time, her honesty and creativity make her a voice worth listening to. In today’s digital world, critics like Brittany show us that you don’t need to wear a suit or write for a magazine to have something important to say.
